Who Can Ride a Segway? Our Rider Requirements

Riding a Segway is similar to riding a bike—it’s intuitive but nobody is born knowing how to operate it. That’s why we offer 30-35 minutes of training so you can get familiar with the device.

A Segway is not an ideal mode of touring for people with some mobility issues. All guests must be able to easily and quickly step on and off the Segway without any assistance, which requires physical abilities similar to climbing and descending stairs without assistance or use of a handrail.

See more disability and medical condition information here.

Segway riding is not recommended for pregnant women. Unfortunately, pregnant guests will not be permitted to participate due to fall risk.

This activity is NOT recommended for some guests age 70 and up Please review information about disabilities and mobility issues listed below..

Safety is very important to us: All guests must be age 12 or older and weight at least 100 lbs. (45 kilos). If you book a tour and any of your guests do not meet the minimum age / weight criteria they will not be allowed on the tour and you will not be given a refund or rescheduled. We do have a scale and check weights. Safety 1st!

Yes we enforce the minimum weight requirement.

We occasionally get asked if we will make an exception for underweight children with athletic ability. No we will not make an exception. All guests must weigh more than a Segway. Safety 1st.

If you have been on a Segway tour in another city and the tour operator let your age 12 and under / under 100 lbs (45 kilos) child participate we will still NOT allow them to ride on our tour. Unlike most Segway tours in other cities we have hills on our route and guests must be the minimum weight and age to safely participate.

Guests will practice on the Segways until everyone feels comfortable and ready to tour San Francisco!

San Francisco Waterfront and Golden Gate Park Tour Rider Requirements:

Segway Tours be age 12 and up and weigh at least 100 lbs (46 kilos). (Bike Tours Ages 16 and up.) For guest safety minimum age and weight requirements are strictly enforced. Who Can Ride a Scooter? Our Rider Requirements

Safety is very important to us: All Scooter guests must be age 16 or older and weight no more than 290 lbs. (131 kilos).  Under age 18 must tour with parent or guardian. (Age requirement is current CA state law)

Scooter riding is not recommended for pregnant women. Unfortunately, pregnant guests will not be permitted to participate due to fall risk.

NOTE: If you have never ridden a bike this may not be the activity for you. Riding a scooter requires side to side balance similar to riding a bike. IMPORTANT: Due to time limits we CANNOT provide riders with no previous bike riding experience with  full training on riding and most importantly balancing on a scooter.
The equipment recap and skills overview session provides riders with a quick overview of the scooter controls, knowledge, and experience needed to safely operate the Scooters. You will  be guided through a low speed ride and an emergency stop to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience.

An electric scooter is not an ideal mode of touring for people with some mobility issues. All guests must be able to easily and quickly step on and off the scooter platform without any assistance, which requires physical abilities similar to climbing and descending stairs without assistance or use of a handrail.

On some hills the scooter will require a bit of “kick” to maintain momentum. The electric motors are helpful on the hills but are not strong enough to propel heavier guests up some slopes. Be prepared to kick.

If you book a tour and any of your guests do not meet the minimum age / weight criteria they will not be allowed on the tour and you will not be given a refund or rescheduled.

Due to fall risk this activity is NOT recommended for some guests age 70 and up or guests with recent surgery, mobility/ motor control issues and other disabilities. Please call to discuss prior to booking.

Be able to stand on the Scooter for a period of 1-2 hours.

Wear the helmet and safety vest that is provided with the tour.

Are Tours Cancelled Due to Weather?

San Francisco is famous for the fog and chilly summer days!
Our tours DO operate in fog, light rain and on windy chilly days.
We always suggest multiple layers of warm clothing for San Francisco outdoor actives.

Summer afternoons can be in the 50’s.
We have rain gear, warm jackets and gloves for those infrequent rainy days or chilly afternoons.

Segways are designed to run in any weather.

Weather reschedules or refunds: In the rare case we cancel due to a severe rain we will offer space on an alternate date or time (if space is available.) or a full refund.

We generally wait until one hour prior to the tour departure time for most rain cancels. Rain along the California coast is very fickle and we end up operating almost every tour on rainy days.

Helpful Hint: Please make sure we have a good phone number to reach you if the weather forecast calls for rain.

Each Segway has a very small handlebar storage bag for cameras, light jackets and purses. Please leave bulky backpacks at home.

What Days Are You Open?

We are open seven days a week. If you plan to be in the Bay Area during 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Fleet Week (Early October) or other Holidays please call for schedule changes. We are closed January 1 and December 25th.

Please check each tour page for current tour times:

Important: For our regularly scheduled public tours: Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time to check in and start your tour and training on time.

If you arrive late we will NOT let you join a tour group that has already started training and your money will not be refunded or your tour rescheduled.

How do I learn to ride a Segway? What is a Segway? How does it work?

How do I learn to ride a Segway?
All first time customers are required to take a 35-40 minute on board training session to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Training time is part of the overall tour time. During the busy summer season training time may be slightly longer. Riders are trained on safe Segway operation, emergency stops, safety cone course and our “Share the Road” policy. Training includes a 9 minute safety video.
The Segway Human Transporter is the first of its kind – a self-balancing, personal transportation device designed to go anywhere people do. Easy to use and operate, the two-wheeled Segway sports high-tech gyroscopes that monitor your balance 100 times a second and automatically respond to your body’s movements. To move forward, the rider simply leans forward. To stop or move backwards, the rider leans back slightly. The rider glides smoothly as the Segway senses where you want to go. We use Lean Steer i2 Segways on our San Francisco Tours.
All riders are required to wear a helmet and bright colored reflective safety vest.

Can I test drive a Segway for 5 minutes?

How long, fast and far can I ride?

The San Francisco Segway Tour has a top speed of about 8 -10 miles per hour. A Segway can average about 24 miles between battery charges. A fully charged battery will last with constant riding for approximately 6 hours. Riding times vary with hills, rider weight and speed.

Segway has settings that limit the top speed. Your tour will begin cruising at no more than 4-5 mph. One additional setting is used for slightly higher 8-10 miles per hour. You can enjoy the entire tour on the lower speed. With crowded streets we limit our speed for a relaxed cruise.

Can I test drive a Segway for 5 minutes?

We do not offer test drives. Take a tour it is fun!

Depending on schedule and staff availability we do offer a pre-tour evaluation and abilities discussion specifically for guests with disabilities / medical conditions that may impair their riding abilities.

What Should I Wear?

What Should I Wear ?

It is cold in San Francisco ! Dress comfortable and in layers.

Highly recommended: Comfortable closed toe flat shoes (no high heels, sandals, shape ups, z-coils or flip flops) and an extra layer of warm, wind resistant clothing.
Gloves are recommended during the winter months.
With the chilly wind, wet fog and damp environment along the waterfront and in the park shorts and a t-shirt are NOT a good fashion idea.

Each Segway has a very small handlebar storage bag for cameras, light jackets and purses.
Backpacks or bulky bags will not fit in the handlebar bags. Please leave bulky backpacks at home.

We have a supply of rain ponchos, warm jackets and lightweight knit gloves at the San Francisco location.
Simple knit caps (beanies) are available for purchase for $2.00 if you want something to wear under the helmet.
Guests may bring their own bike helmets.

Are guide gratuities included in the tour price?

Are guide gratuities included in the tour or team building price?
For our team building and group tours: Gratuities are included as part of the pre-paid cost for our private group tours team building and corporate events.
For our regularly scheduled public tours: With our guests from around the world we get asked about guide gratuities every day. Guide gratuities are not included in the tour price. We do not include a fixed price gratuity as we want to keep the tours affordable for as many guests as possible. Guide gratuities are completely at the discretion of the guest. We employ a great and diverse group of guides. They guide because it is a fun job and they get to meet people from all corners of the world. Similar to service businesses all over the United States, gratuities are a small part of the compensation the staff receives. If you choose to give your guide a gratuity, it would be much appreciated.

Can Private Tours be Customized?

Can Private Tours be Customized?

Yes we can make changes in routes, stop longer at a special spot or adjust the route to the guest riding ability.  Let us know what you want to see and do.

There are parts of downtown San Francisco that are too congested for a relaxed tour experience and we suggest not touring in that area. National Parks are off limits to Segways.

Do your tours go across or to the Golden Gate Bridge?

Do your tours go across or to the Golden Gate Bridge?

This is a popular request and the answer is unfortunately no for our Segway Tours and a partial yes for our Scooter Tours..

Segways and Electric Scooters for safety reasons are not allowed on the bridge sidewalks. The areas surrounding the bridge entrances are both National Parks – The Presidio on the South end and Golden Gate Recreation Area on the North.

Segways are not currently allowed in the National Parks. We do get great views of the Bridge and San Francisco Bay from our Waterfront Segway Tour routes.

Our Wharf to Bridge Scooter Route does go to the Golden Gate Bridge. We can park the scooters near the bridge sidewalk entrance and walk out.  We do get amazing views of the Bridge, Fort Point, Bridge Overlook and San Francisco Bay from our scooter tour routes.

Do you offer shorter time Private tours?

Do you offer shorter time Private tours?

We can shorten the time slightly for Private Tours. We don’t recommend making a private tour event less that 1.5 to 2 hours. The training takes between 25-35 minutes and for guest safety cannot be shortened.  Larger groups (over 25 guests) can take a bit longer to train and we do want you to see some of the city too!

Please ask our tea

San Francisco is famous for the fog! Our tours run fog, light rain or shine. We always suggest multiple layers of warm clothing for any San Francisco or Bay Area activity. Summer afternoons can be in the 50’s. Rain gear is available for those infrequent rainy days. Segways are designed to run in light rain. In the rare case of a tour cancellation due to a severe rain we will offer space on an alternate date or time (if space is available.) Each Segway has a handlebar storage bag for cameras, light jackets and purses. Please leave bulky backpacks at home.

IMPORTANT Check your Confirmation for Correct Date and Time:

It is your responsibility to be at the designated tour location on the correct date. Please check your confirmation carefully. No refund for no-shows.
